Teams & Issues: Technology/Best Practices Team

Focus
The VOICES of the Technology/Best Practices team will be dedicated to learning about the best processes, practices and systems across campus and peer institutions. The team will explore ideas concerning how to integrate those processes and systems to provide optimal levels of service and information.
Objectives
To examine the selected topic of Technology/Best Practices by:
- Listening to and learning about staff experiences with best practices using a variety of venues to promote and improve the leveraging of technology to optimal levels at U-M.
- Learning about the major enterprise processing and reporting systems and how they are supported.
- Learning about the best current ideas for using “social networking” technologies on campuses.
- Exploring best practices using alternative schedules and technology to accomplish work.
- Learning about best practice methods to distribute information and reporting.
- Exploring where technology could be used to save resources.
- Learning about technology information available to staff to manage their professional and personal computing needs.
- Finding ways to share what is learned with the wider staff community.
Wins
- Project Managers for the Space Utilization Initiative, which aims to help the university make better use of its classroom, research and office space and save taxpayer and tuition dollars. came and shared information on the various projects.
- Laura Patterson, Associate Vice President Associate Vice President and Chief Information Officer, spoke with the team in November to talk about the main Information and Technology Services (ITS) initiatives and how VOICES can be involved.
- The team created a social media matrix showing VOICES' goals using social media and comparing possible social media tools for future use. The matrix was shared with the Program Management Team to guide them in selecting future communication and collaboration tools for VOICES.
- In collaboration with University Human Resources and the Office of General Counsel, the team is also developing guidelines and recommendations for successfully applying social media tools in the work environment.
