Focus
The VOICES of the Staff network team for Diversity is dedicated to exploring ways to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Objectives
- To examine the selected topic of diversity by offering creative ways to encourage and promote diversity in every work area and department.
- Indentifying innovative strategies to sustain and improve effectiveness in recruiting, retaining and supporting a diverse staff.
- Indentifying rich opportunities for interaction and ways to address institutional barriers to success.
- Identifying ways to provide recognition for staff who demonstrate a commitment to diversity.
- Addressing how to provide an environment where intercultural skills are developed and enacted among diverse campus constituencies and with community partners.
- Exploring ways to create a climate and environment so stimulating and attractive that the experience of difference becomes a source of excellence and an instrument of achievement.
Wins
In March 2009, the VOICES Diversity Team received an award of $5000 from the University of Michigan Diversity Council to produce a DVD that will showcase staff diversity and provide a recruitment tool to enhance diversity in the future. The DVD may be used on Web sites such as Careers at the U and Building Great Places to Work. In a letter notifying the Diversity team of the award, Lester Monts, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Special Counselor to the President for the Arts, Diversity and Undergraduate Affairs, congratulated the Diversity team and expressed thanks "for your efforts to expand access to and understanding of the value of diversity."
Work in Progress
- The Diversity Team is currently assembling best practice information from within and outside the University of Michigan.
